HORSE OWNER NEXT DATES for One Week classes : (no two week classes scheduled for 2009 yet) The instructor, Patty Stiller CNBF, CLS, is a certified Natural Balance Lameness Specialist. She was most recently the instructor for the Pikes Peak Community College Farrier Science. She is also a former staff farrier for University of California Davis veterinary teaching hospital. Classes are held at the home facilities of Natural Balance in Penrose, Colorado, at Equine Digit Support Systems Inc, in co-operation with the Equine Lameness Prevention Organization. In these five and ten day classes, horse owners will receive instruction in basic hoofcare techniques using Natural Balance principles. In these classes you will receive more “hands on” practical instruction for the price than in any of the other barefoot hoof trimming classes you may have seen advertized or discussed on the internet or hoofcare magazines. You may choose to attend only week one for hoof trimming only, or attend both weeks to get more hands on practice and an introduction to fitting and nailing on horse shoes.
Participants need to be physically fit, able to twist and bend to get under horses in farrier positions, and lift heavy objects. *2 The classes run in two intensive five day sessions, 7 class hours a day with the weekend off in between. Classes run from 9 AM to 5 PM with a one hour lunch break . Horses are supplied. *3
WEEK ONE : Natural Balance theory and Barefoot hoof trimming Day 2: Morning: Lecture and Power Points , classroom. Continue learning to recognize common hoof distortion which will lead to gait faults and lameness. Learn to identify a healthy foot from an unhealthy foot. Recognize a good shoeing from a poor shoeing. Learn how to measure, evaluate and map hooves to achieve proper hoof balance and form. Day 3: Morning to early afternoon. : Nail shoes (instructor fit) on cadaver limbs. Learn to pull horse shoes off.
Afternoon : Dissections of cadaver limbs with discussion of anatomy and pathology. This will done be in teams. Day 4: all day: Day 5: WEEK TWO of two week classes: introduction to shoeing.
Day 6: all day: Introduction to shoeing tools, anvil, cold shoe shaping and leveling.
Practice shaping and leveling factory keg shoes to various patterns .
Day 7: all day: Discussion of nailing safety. Shape and nail shoes on cadaver hooves. Learn how to to remove horse shoes.
Day 8: all day: Day 9: all day Shoe live horses. Two students per horse.
Day 10: all day : Shoe live horses, two students per horse , until early afternoon. Review
Classes are limited in size to insure each participant will receive maximum hands-on individualized instruction.
Admission for week one only is $500. Admission for both weeks is $950. No auditors.
Admission registration and Deposit of $250 MUST be received no later than 30 days in advance to hold your place.
You may transfer your admission deposit to another eligible person if you can not attend. Deposits are only refundable if class is cancelled. We have indoor facilities, so weather will not cancel classes. If classes are cancelled due to any reason such as not having minimum number of students, you will be notified 30 days prior to class date and deposit refunded. Minimum of 4 participants required to hold classes, maximum of 8. Deposit amount is non refundable except in instance where class is cancelled. Deposit may be transferred to another eligible person in event that original registrant can not attend. Class will not be cancelled due to weather. In event of cancellation for other reasons, all amounts received will be refunded to the registrant by Hoofcare Specialties LLC . In the unlikely event that listed instructor is unavailable; a substitute instructor of equal qualification may fill in. No person under 18 years of age allowed unless accompanied by a paid attending parent or guardian.
No dogs allowed. Nearby motels, and RV hookups within 11 miles are available,as well as our own student housing .

HOOF TRIMMING AND HORSE SHOEING CLASSES
ONE WEEK TRIMMING CLASS March 30th through April 3rd, 2009

Want to learn to trim your own horse’s hooves? Frustrated with shoeing emergencies? Do you have a herd of horses at home and hoof trimming is getting too expensive? Do you want to learn to be able to take care of basic emergency shoeing and everyday trimming needs just for your own horses but you are unable to take several months off work or can not afford to attend a full time, long farrier school? Here is a solution!
Learn how to pull shoes, level a hoof and reset a lost shoe(in the two week class) , and do everyday, basic barefoot hoof trimming. Be able to maintain your horse’s hooves in between farrier visits. *1 WE SUPPLY TOOLS FOR CLASS USE.

Day 1: Morning: In depth anatomy and function of the lower limb. We use Power point lectures, diagrams, and videos.
Afternoon: Discuss foot form and anatomy related to movement. Demonstration of hoof trim by instructor . Q and A .
Afternoon: Introduction to hand tool use and positions . Hands on ,Evaluate, map and Trim cadaver feet.
Late Afternoon if time : Demonstration of positions under a live horse and hoof handling. Practice positions and hoof handling.
Positioning under the horse and horse handling. Trimming live horses. Each participant will be individually instructed on one foot in the morning, while other participants watch and learn. In the afternoon, everyone will trim more live hooves. This will be on a team basis, to facilitate more individualized instruction.
More trimming live horses , this will take all day. End of day REVIEW

*3) HORSES: We will supply horses. Participants may bring their own horses, *by pre arrangement only*. No overnight stabling. Horses must meet the behavior and training criteria to be in a group setting and have their hooves handled quietly. We do not accept young horses or those who need ground training. . NO stallions!
